New Jersey is one of those states in the union that doesn’t get a lot of respect, but for those in the know, it is a wonderful tourist destination and a great place to call home. Depictions in popular culture like The Sopranos and the emphasis on its nuclear power plants have saddled the state with negative stereotypes. It is the infamous New Jersey Turnpike that is the butt of many a joke such as “you’re from Jersey? What exit?” Those who have actually spent time in New Jersey can attest to the wonderful destinations that the Garden State has to offer. New Jersey’s popularity is steadily on the rise.
One indicator of the changing tide in New Jersey’s favor is the growing and increasing interest in New Jersey gifts. At any stop along The NJ Turnpike one will come across New Jersey collectibles such as mugs, piggy banks, and shot glasses with designs that proudly proclaim a love for New Jersey.
One of the companies who supply the travel plazas and gift shops throughout the state is Fifth Avenue Souvenirs. This company has witnessed first hand the growth in New Jersey’s popularity. I recently spoke with Mary Ellis, the creative engine and designer of Fifth Avenue’s signature look who confirmed this trend. ” Our company has seen an increase over the last couple of years in interest in New Jersey souvenirs. The designs people seem most drawn to are our New Jersey Heart and Kisses from New Jersey designs.” Since 1995, this small family run business has kept their focus primarily on New York City’s bustling tourist industry, but as they confirm, New Jersey is now becoming a match for The Big Apple.
This company offers these Heart and Kisses designs on a wide range of product that all seems to be doing very well despite the economic downturn. “People have a strong personal connection to New Jersey. Our New Jersey Heart design has proven to be even more popular than our New York Heart.” Ellis says. The products she is referring to include mugs, t-shirts, piggy banks, shot glasses, magnets, paper cubes, a full spectrum of New Jersey gifts and collectibles. All of these high quality New Jersey gifts feature Ellis’ one of a kind look that combines whimsy and playfulness with smart and sophisticated product. The Heart Design features the word New Jersey in a brushstroke like font, with a bright red heart. Similar but not quite the same as the famous I Heart New York design by Milton Glaser.
It could be argued that New Jersey’s biggest draw is the endless miles of sandy beaches and charming communities that line its shores. Most people fall in love with a particular town and visit it year after year. As a little girl my folks would take me to Wildwood every summer where I would joyfully play on the water slides and eat cotton candy on the boardwalk. As an adult I go with my husband to Cape May for a more relaxing and peaceful vacation.
As a New Jersey lover, my house is filled with New Jersey collectible shot glasses and various assorted knick-knacks. Wild Wood New Jersey
Being close to the Boardwalk means being close to the noise and problems of the boardwalk. I would suggest that you stay in Wildwood Crest which is very residential with nice hotels/motels on the Beach. If you stay between Cresse Ave and Cardinal you can easily walk to the end of the boardwalk on the bike path and then take the tram to the boardwalks best parts. Take the tram to Gateway 26 and then walk back…
