Is it legal to re-use a Dell XP re-installation CD key on a new computer?
I’m providing IT services for a SOHO (small office home office) client and the computer currently has Vista. She wants to use an XP Dell CD Key from an old, dead computer and use it to load over the Vista one to save money. Is this legal?
You’ll probably have to call Microsoft and get a new key to activate it. They will deactivate the old key so any rig running XP with it will not be able to boot into Windows shortly after anyone goes online with it. You don’t want to install “XP over Vista”. You need to get rid of Vista before you put XP in. Make sure you have XP drivers for all the hardware before you do it. A lot of new towers that come with Vista have no XP drivers whatsoever available for them. Totally legal as long as you’re running the OS on only one computer.
As far as someone saying it being OEM makes a difference thats hogwash. Only difference with OEM versus retail is that you dont get free online support from Microsoft on OEM operating systems.
