Michigan Taxation Law
Taxation Law in Michigan
There are more than 52 taxes from both the state and local entities in Michigan, but they all fall into one of the five main types of taxes levied against individuals or businesses. These are
- Income taxes
- Sales taxes
- Property taxes
- Transportation taxes
- Business and privilege taxes.
Through these, the state of Michigan and the local governments earn enough money to support the public programs and services offered.
The most well known tax is the state and local sales tax. Since every individual and business makes purchases, all residents and nonresidents of Michigan pay this tax. The income taxes are those placed upon earnings. Closely resembling the federal income tax, these are the most well known next to the sales tax.
The business and privilege taxes are those paid by businesses and for gambling. These also include various service taxes for statewide services. Since business taxes can be very complicated, many businesses have in house accountants or they seek outside assistance in the filing.
Transportation taxes are included in the price of gasoline, vehicle registration, other types of transportation, and fuel. Income from these is used in the building and maintenance of roadways.
The last category of Michigan taxes includes some of the most hotly contested taxes. Property taxes include those levied on property for the state and local education funds, utilities, real estate transfers, and estate taxes. Many also call estate taxes death taxes as they are levied on an estate after a death.

Buying property in another state?
I am a college student living in Ohio. I have been seriously considering investing in property in Flint, Michigan with my tax returns. There are homes selling for less than $500, most of which are in serious need of reconditioning. What sort of legal issues should I be aware of before I begin my search? Is there anyone I should consult before buying a home, such as a lawyer, real estate consultant, etc.? I would not be living in the home. It would be something I buy with cash and slowly renovate or sell when the market picks up.
Oddly enough I travel to Flint at least 15 times a year, so I know crime is a huge problem as well as unemployment. The roads are awful, and the city itself has decayed to the point of being an unusually “rural” town.
But I think if Flint got enough outside aide, it has potential to be much more. Even if I don’t but a property, I want to get involved in some capacity to help the city move on.
like in the movie “The Money Pit”, in some cases, it can cost
tens of thousands of dollars to rehab a home.
HOW to reduce one’s risk? Hire both a real estate
Buyer’s agent [never permit dual agency] and
when you have found 2-3 homes that really look “good” and
are in your price range, hire a home inspector ONLY IF Michigan
requires home inspectors to be licensed [and are tested by the state.]
IN some cases, you can buy a HOME SHIELD or other appliance
insurance policy to be paid for at close of escrow; your
agent should know who in your areas of interest offers
such insurance.
and make sure you look carefully at every inch of the house.
and get a preliminary title search done…to see who has owned
the house.
