How to quit a job where they’ve trained you to take over the company?
After a long interview process and a lot of time working in the company I’ve finally made a name for myself. The boss and all my co-workers are very nice to me and taught me things that I needed to know. This job is what I always thought I had wanted and my boss has told me several times that when he decides to leave I will be taking charge. However recently I have had a change of heart and decided to quit this job and go onto police work. My question is how do I come about and tell my boss that although he has trained me, spent money on me etc I am just up and leaving him? Its a completely different career, where I would be helping people but I am quite scared of sitting down in his office with him and telling him. I’m not sure how he’d react. If I stay with him and work for him I’d be in the running for the top job. How will he react? Can anyone give me advice on what to say to him? Should I say I’m moving interstate? I feel I should come out and be honest with him. Help appreciated
I think honesty is still the best policy here. He will be disappointed, but he will understand that people change and life goals and priorities can change on a dime.

Make sure you give your boss alternatives – is there someone you work closely with who could train and take on the position you were meant to take? Throwing someone a bomb is less explosive and detrimental if a good option is also given.
